We fell asleep not long after and I dreamed of motorcycles. I awoke to an empty bed and thought Bishop had taken off, but he was in the kitchen. He made coffee so I poured myself a cup.

“OK, it’s time. I’ll be back in less than an hour.” He kissed me and walked to the door.

“Wait,” I said. He turned back to me. There was something in his eyes. I couldn’t tell what it was but it made me nervous.

“Don’t worry, Marie. I’ll be back before you know.”

He left. I finished my coffee and got dressed. I packed a bag and realized there was nothing else to bring in my new life. The furniture came with the apartment. I guess I already had the makings for a life on the road.

I waited for Bishop to come back. I waited an hour. Then two. Then a day, but he never showed. I went crazy thinking about him. At first I thought maybe he decided not to take me along, but even in the short time we were together I knew him well enough to know that wasn’t true.

If he didn’t leave me behind and he wasn’t here that only meant one thing, he couldn’t come back. Either he was held somewhere or he was dead. I got my answer a couple of days later when the police showed up at my door. They had found a body with my name and phone number written on a piece of paper. They asked if I knew Gordon Summers, also known as Bishop. I told them I knew a Bishop, but I didn’t know anyone named Gordon Summers.

They asked a few questions but it was clear they didn’t think I was a suspect. They left saying I would get a call when they knew something concrete but I never did.

I went a little off the rails after that. I started hanging at biker bars, trying to recapture the excitement of Bishop, but I failed every time. I became a fixture with some of the local clubs, even learned to ride, but I never escaped the memory of what we had.

I was sitting up in the bed, my arms around my legs. “That’s my story. Now you know why I want to help keep drugs out of our town. It meant so much to Bishop and it means a lot to me.”

Rian was resting against some pillows. He put out his cigarette and put his arms around me. “It means a lot to the both of us. We’re going to finish this. That’s a promise.”

I leaned against him, hoping he was right.
